For
over a year, I labored over 7 full-length portraits depicting prom girls
at various stages of the experience: fitting a dress, taking photos with
mom, posing for the official photo, etc. The viewer also takes the
place of a different character: boyfriend, prom photographer, parent,
etc. Many elements from historical portraits (columns, flower's,
small dogs, etc) have been given a contemporary and specifically American
revision. Color was a big focus of the series. I was tired
of painting Velasquez grays and really amped up my palette, which seemed
appropriate considering the gaudy dresses. They were recently exhibited
at an actual senior prom.
